Style Drum

I'm having to write a drum part for a MIDI for some college work in the style of rock but I do not know what rhythm a "rock" looks like, I do not know what bit was set when, for example, should I start with a top hat and a bass, then click Next to a tom tom or something? Any help will be greatly appreciated!
